School Music Program Participation Policy
In an effort to support school music programs throughout the Pikes Peak region, the CSYSA enforces the following, board-approved policy.
Committee for Lasting Educational Fairness
CSYSA School Participation Policy
The Committee for Lasting Educational Fairness was formed at the Oct 2017 CSYSA Board of Directors meeting. The Committee was formed to examine the current school participation policy and recommend changes based on correspondence from a local school music director request. The Committee met from November 2017 to February 2018, examined the current school participation policy, determined our evaluation criteria, solicited inputs from the committee and local school music directors and determined:
-
The Colorado Springs Youth Symphony Association recognizes that public and private school music programs are essential to its existence,
-
The Colorado Springs Youth Symphony Association student musicians’ participation in any school music program ensemble benefits the student, the CSYSA and the school, and
-
The relationship between the CSYSA and local school music directors would benefit from a more direct, recurring and ongoing outreach from CSYSA to music directors.
To that end, the Committee for Lasting Educational Fairness recommended an updated policy, which was approved by the Board of Directors on March 21, 2018.
The Colorado Springs Youth Symphony Association recognizes that public and private school music programs are essential to its existence as these programs help launch most students into their musical careers. The Colorado Springs Youth Symphony Association expects that all CSYSA musicians participate in their school music programs. CSYSA students are important leaders in their respective educational institutions and it is expected that they contribute to their music programs to the best of their ability unless there are prohibiting circumstances or reasons.
The CSYSA believes strongly that our students’ participation in our region’s school music programs is essential. Students receive the most benefit when school music programs and the CSYSA work as complimentary organizations.
