Kathryn Vickous, soprano vocalist, is a senior vocal music performance major pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Visual and Performing Arts at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (UCCS). During her time at UCCS, Kathryn has privately trained with opera singer Solveig Olsen, expanding her vocal repertoire to include genres such as classical music, musical theatre, jazz, and folk music. She has also had the opportunity to work with renowned artists such as Raven Chacon, George Lewis and Walter Thomas. Kathryn has been a member of several ensembles during her time at UCCS such as University Choir, Chamber Music Ensemble, VAPA Vocal Ensemble, Electroacoustic Ensemble, Drums of the World Ensemble, and the Creative Music Ensemble the latter of which gave her the opportunity to play percussion in the music ensemble for the Theatreworks spring 2020 production of the musical “Hair.”
Kathryn’s passion for music and performance began at an early age as she began singing in church and school choirs at the age of five and continued to do so through high school. A Georgia native, she attended Savannah Arts Academy majoring in voice where she and her fellow choir members had the opportunity to perform on prestigious stages such as Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center as well as compete in competitions all along the east coast.
Kathryn states that her multifaceted vocal repertoire is a reflection of her childhood, having been raised by two avid music lovers with two vastly different musical palettes. Her father loved all varieties of rock and roll from metal to latin rock, while her mother favored hymns, gospels, Christian music and musical theatre. Kathryn’s upcoming spring 2021 senior recital will include music from a multitude of genres such as classical music, musical theatre, jazz, and folk music.
Currently, Kathryn works as the rehearsal receptionist for the Colorado Springs Youth Symphony Association and though she doesn’t know what the future will hold for her after she graduates, she is confident that music will be a part of it as it always has been from the very beginning.
